Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?
This picture was taken on Halloween 2007. It was the first year the boys had ever been trick-or-treating. (We had always taken them to fall festivals at neighborhood churches.) As the picture shows, Kaden was dressed as Superman; Hunter was dressed as Spider-Man.
As we knocked on each door, the owner of the house came to the door and made a similar comment:
"Wow! Look at Spider-Man and Superman!"
or
""Hey Spider-Man! Hey Superman! Cool costumes!"
We made the rounds on our street, visiting at least twenty houses. Each comment to our Superman and Spider-Man was met with the same response. Hunter would immediately lift his mask off of his face and say, "I'm actually Hunter and this is my brother Kaden." You would think that eventually he would just let it go and play along. Not him. Every time he would inform the homeowner that they were mistaken about his identity.
Some neighbors would follow this up with the question: "Well, do you want to be Spider-Man when you grow up?"
What kid doesn't want to be a superhero? I know I wanted to be Wonder Woman for about five years or so of my childhood, invisible plane and all. Hunter's response surprised me, though. He said, "No, I just want to be Hunter when I grow up."
He seemed so confident in who he was. In a world full of uncertainty, it was such a refreshing attitude.
Philippians 1:6 says, "And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns."
I guess 5-year-old Hunter was on to something. As believers in Christ, we should just want to be us when we grow up, being confident that God will make us more and more like Christ each day. That sounds like a good goal to have, doesn't it?
